James “Shange” Black was born on 9/4/1979 in Queens, New York. He was raised by his Grand Parents, Edna & John Black along with his siblings. Shange attended Franklin K. Lane High School where he always knew he wanted to be a ball player and a coach.
1996-1999 - In high school James Black was player of the year in Public School Athletic League for Franklin K. Lane High School in Brooklyn, New York, where he was All Honorable Mention, Second Team All American, and City Championship dependable. He won various inner state tournaments to name a few; Nike Swoosh, UDC, City Wide and Conrad McRae. During this time he caught the attention of a local AAU coach who gave him the job of head coach of the New York City Panthers. He started competing locally and winning.
1999-2001 - James attended Marist College in Poughkeepsie New York. He never got his chance to play ball due to a tragic car accident his freshman year that left him with a partially paralyzed left hand, screws in his knee and a plate in his head. James left Marist College and started working at a local middle school coaching basketball. Through Pastor Omar Morton James met Dwayne Tiny Morton, who became James mentor and he gained a lot of experience during their time together.
2002 - In 2002, James became the assistant coach to the 17U Juice All Stars. Traveling all over the country and playing in top tournaments. Out of that program, 300+ young men were recruited into Division I,2, 3 & Jr college's programs and Five made it to the NBA: (Stephon Marbury, Sebastian Telfair, Chris Taft, Lance Stephenson, Quincy Douby). He also coached Michael Beasley, the #2 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
2005-Presently - In 2005, James was offered a teachers aid job in Jamaica New York. He assisted the gym teacher with instructing the students with the fundamentals in various sports.
In 2005, James also became the assistant coach of the (Jay Z sponsored) Shawn Carter Elite 7th & 8th grade teams. The team won the AAU basketball national tournament in Orlando. During this time James ability was noticed during the games and was offered to coach at (accepted) St. Mary’s in Long Island.
James has taken many players under his wing and has also mentored young adults, James has played an intricate role into the early careers of; Karron Johnson who is contemplating one of several prominent colleges. This player has developed into one of the most powerful new prospects coming out of high school. Eric McKnight Of FGCU who at 6’10 is a force to reckon as his skills and game fundamentals, places him in the right places at the right time, McKnight help Lead FGCU to the 2013 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
James “Shange” Black has consistently proven himself to be a force and mentor for these young men. He assists young men in developing self esteem, and game fundamentals through learning new skills and techniques. We will continue to hear more from James “Shange” Black and his commitment to persevere with the youth of basketball today.
