Meet the Founder
Dwayne “Tiny” Morton is a Coney Island native who continues to work in and give back to his community. Mr. Morton graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School and went on to receive his B.A. in Business Administration and his M.S. in Education in School Counseling from Long Island University. Since 1994, he has taught mathematics at PS/IS 288 in Coney Island.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Morton is the head coach of the Abraham Lincoln High School Boys Varsity basketball team, one of the most successful high school programs in the nation. Since taking on this position in 1996, he has guided many young men in achieving full athletic scholarships to top colleges and universities. Under Coach Morton’s leadership, the Abraham Lincoln Rail-splitters have competed for the Public School Athletic League City Championship at Madison Square Garden in eight consecutive seasons, (2002-2009), winning 7 out of 8 City Chips and 3 New York State Federation Championship titles. Coach Morton is the first coach in New York State history to win 3 consecutive PSAL City Championships two times over and guide a player, Sebastian Telfair, from high school to the NBA. He is the only active coach in New York State to win a championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
During the summer of 2002, Coach Morton created a non-for profit organization called Books Before Ball Inc.
The mission of Books Before Ball Inc. is to provide underprivileged high school student-athletes the opportunity to earn college scholarships. B4B addresses these issues and sets players on the path to earn a college degree.
B4B aims to educate its members about the process of becoming a student- athlete. Players learn NCAA rules, regulations and necessary core-course requirements to qualify for a scholarship and are tracked with an individual academic plan.
Each year, B4B members travel to an average of 12 different tournaments, playing as the Juice All-Stars, where they display their skills for coaches from top colleges and universities across the country. Over the past eight years, the Juice All-Stars traveled to New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Texas, Ohio, North Carolina and Nevada to showcase their talents, resulting in numerous scholarship offers. All expenses for tournament and travel are paid for by B4B.
The ultimate goal of B4B is to develop our members into positive role models. In return, we hope that these young men use their experiences and education to give back to their communities and become assets to society.
Morton has now passed the torch over to Director Darrin Smith as James"Shange"Black is the Founder of Juice All-Stars NC.
